I read “When Helping Hurts” while taking some Chalmers Courses about poverty alleviation back in 2009. Since then NMSI has adopted it as a must read before anyone goes to the field as a missionary. The book gives great examples about how all parts of our lives need to be redeemed. With with all those parts needing to be redeemed we need different methods to help in that redemption. Christian’s often focus on a couple easy ways they believe that can help people and often times those ways even with good intentions lead to hurting people worse than before. For basics knowing the difference between relief work and development work is very important. This book delves into these issues and tells us there is a different way for Christians to engage the world to help it be redeemed. I want to recommend that everyone download this free audio book and read it. I’d love to get your feedback on what you learned.
