Deep thoughts… with the Frantic Frenchman

Not every language lesson is deep but all are bountiful. Some (in fact most) happen sitting around talking about life, and in France it almost always involves food.

Take for example this last lesson.

We were sitting around talking about attitudes and I mentioned that I didn’t want to become a person who was always grumpy.

Grumpy = grincheux
‘J’ai pas envie d’être grincheux.’

Our friend added that that person could also be aigre. Which means bitter or sour. Nikki and I had both forgotten this word but then he dropped the bombshell language moment.

‘Tu sais, aigre… comme le vinaigre, c’est du vin qui est devenu aigre.’

So vinegar literally means bitter or sour wine.

Our minds were blown and it proved to us that there is always meaning in the details.

Today Nikki will be leading worship and I’ll be preaching in Loches while the pastor and his family are either away or out of the country for various reasons. It’s a joy to get to share! Next week we will go to Montreuil-Bellay (which I’m still not sure exactly how to pronounce) where I, Greg, will preach. Montreuil-Bellay is about an hour and a half from our house. It’s also amazing to have other sister churches near by that we get to participate in. We are certainly blessed to get to share in a wonderful and large Kingdom.
