The goal of Project New Hope is to give hope to the suffering, socially abandoned, economically trapped and spiritually seeking in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, and Trujillo, Peru. PNH works with nationals in the communities, establishing churches to empower the poor to experience personal and community transformation, using the key strategies of Community Health Evangelism (CHE) and Bible storytelling.
Santos, Juana, Angel and Edwin, a Peruvian family, served as missionaries with the Butkas in Ecuador for several years.

Dear friends,

When we started our ministry in Trujillo, Peru, in 2005, Santos and Juana were the first couple that we befriended. They have two boys: Angel, 16, and Edwin, 13, who has Down syndrome. Santos and Juana both have an interesting testimony on how they became believers.

After Santos and Juana were baptized and decided to get married, they became extremely involved in the church. They volunteered and served abundantly throughout the years. They grew spiritually throughout this time and we decided to train them to become leaders of the church. Eventually, they were put in charge of a church in the barrio.

They were one of the families that moved with us to Ecuador from Peru. They became missionaries alongside us and continued to grow in their relationships with Christ. They helped us plant the churches here in Santo Domingo. Due to a decrease in funds we had to let them go. In January, they had to move back to Peru. When Juana told Edwin that they were moving back to Peru he said, “With Mike?”

Mike Butka and Edwin are very close friends after years of ministry together.
Their oldest son, Angel, only has a year and half left in high school. Returning to Peru would cause him to lose a year of his education. So he will be living with us in order to continue his studies. We will take the responsibility as if he were our own son. Angel is an extremely intelligent boy and has a bright future ahead of him. His desire is to become a doctor and he will be the first person in his family to attend a university. The amazing thing about this is that ever since our girls (Skylar and Nicole) have known Angel they have always considered him their brother. The three of them have always treated each other as if they were siblings and now it has become true.
Angel, center, is now living with the Butka family in Ecuador while he finishes high school.
Even though this was a hard decision to make, Santos and Juana said that they were blessed that they were able to be a part of the work here and to be a part of this big family we have formed with each other. Their lives have definitely been transformed through these past 11 years. Their desire is to continue to evangelize and disciple the people in their neighborhood in Trujillo, Peru.

Please keep them in your prayers. Pray that Santos will find a job in order to support his family. Pray that Angel will quickly adapt to his “gringo” parents. Pray that their relationship with Christ will continue to flourish. Also pray that they will continue to focus on Christ and doing His will.

Thank you for all your prayers and support!
Mike and Danell

Project New Hope + CMF

CMF and Project New Hope are part of an exciting partnership with Team Expansion missionaries Mike and Dani Bukta and their work in Peru and Ecuador. Through this partnership we will work together toward holistic mission where disciples are made, individual lives are transformed, and nationals are empowered to lead. U.S. churches actively partner in this ministry with the goal of creating dynamic Christ-centered communities (churches) that can transform the world.
