Orchard Group – September News – Introducing The Santa Barbara Project
“There are thousands of people in Santa Barbara who need to know the life-changing and life-giving Good News of Jesus Christ. We are humbled that God has chosen us to be His messengers.”
-Jake Barker, lead planter of the Santa Barbara Project
Santa Barbara is known for its Mediterranean-like climate, beaches, and wineries. It is one of the most visited cities in the United States. The city itself has a vibrant historic culture, with a large population of young adults due to the presence of several universities. Santa Barbara also presents unique challenges, as it is one of the least churched cities in the US.
Planting churches is exciting work. Seeing those churches grow into thriving, fruitful communities is rewarding beyond measure! A recent visit to REDEMPTION CHURCH in the heart of San Francisco revealed a community of people committed to God, each other, and living out the gospel in their city. One attendee commented, “The gospel is what kept me coming back. No matter what the sermon is, Christ is the centerpiece.”
PRO DEO CHURCH in Cape Town, South Africa, has emphasized that it is a church “Where You Belong.” This is intentional, as lead planters Louis and Yolandi Scheepers have noted that loneliness seems to be a prevalent part of city life. One young woman said to them, “I’ve lived here for three years and have no friends.”
Louis and Yolandi have prioritized making relationships in the church. In six months, they had more than 100 people in their apartment for dinners, studies, and gatherings. As they build relationships, they also point people to the community that comes from following Jesus. Pro Deo just celebrated their first baptisms on Sunday!
