Independence Day is an important event for any country. Every country has its own traditions and celebrations but the festivities of Independence Day in Guatemala are in a league of their own. Because of all the activities and events, Guatemalans celebrate their Independence for about a week, if not more.  There are parades, public presentations showcasing Guatemalan culture, and various Fine Arts competitions. However there is one cultural event that many people ask us in the halls of the Morning Glory Campus.  Today, we want to shed a little light on what it means when Morning Glory chooses its “niñas.”
Unfortunately, Guatemala as a whole has a history of discrimination against women. So years ago, they began to establish certain activities to include and honor women. For Independence Day in Guatemala, every school chooses their “niñas” or a court of young women that represent their country, cultural symbols, and schools.
In many cases, the girls who want to be elected for their school participate in a pageant-style election, presenting themselves and their ideas about the country in a variety of fashions. However, it often turns into a popularity contest in which the friendliest or most social girl is chosen to represent their school.
Miss Morning Glory 2014 passes the crown and title to Miss Morning Glory 2015
At Morning Glory, we know that the merit of a person cannot be judged by just one or two credentials.  Our director, Lori Nij, insists that the leadership of the school choose “niñas” based on a number of criteria. Around the first week of September, every class elects girls to be considered by Lori to become “niñas.” Pre-Primary teachers work together to choose their court, but in Primary and Secondary School, Lori and other staff members evaluate each girls, many times through interviews and essays, to choose girls that have academic excellence, a good attitude, a history of healthy inter-personal relationships with their peers, and that demonstrate the Core Values of Morning Glory day in and day out.
All the girls elected as “niñas” are chosen based on their values and achievements. The girl elected in 1st and 2nd grade is titled “Miss Monja Blanca” after the national flower of Guatemala. 3rd and 4th grades have Miss Escolar (scholastic).  Miss Independence is the girl that is chosen in 5th and 6th grade.
Secondary School chooses three representatives.  Miss Independence is the girl chosen to represent Guatemala in our presentations, but Mister and Miss Morning Glory are the students with the highest grades, best conduct, and best representation of our Core Values. Of course, every “niña” elected is a very special student and we are proud of all of them but when you see Mister and Miss Morning Glory, you know that they are the example of what we want to accomplish in our students.

So if you ever come to Morning Glory, and you see the pictures of the girls with beautiful dresses and tierras, we hope you will know that these girls are more than just pretty faces.  These girls are great blessings to our organization and their country.  These girls, and one boy, are the young leaders who are “self-determining;” seeking to rise above their circumstances and their culture to write their own Story and even change the Story of Guatemala.
