When Faith Intersects Development: Merkato District, Ethiopia
|
|
| The Merkato market district in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is Africa’s largest open air market. Merkato is the main hub for all business exchanges in the area. What’s not seen in the market, however, is the incredible poverty many of the merchants and their families live in. The streets are riddled with orphans and abandoned children who seek odd jobs in the market to have money for food. The environment lends itself to increased levels of crime and desperation.
Our 2015 Community Impact Report reveals how, "in the midst of a predominantly Muslim community, Emmanuel Church [a local church in the community] felt overwhelmed with the challenges it faced. Not too far away, LIA was working with street children to help them break addictive habits, get rehabilitated, and transition back into school and society, so Emmanuel asked LIA to help them with their ministry. LIA’s approach was to work with the government as a partner and then equip the church leadership with the skills needed in order to enhance the work they had begun."
With education held as a key component of our model, we saw the opportunity to equip Emmanuel Church to help support the large orphans and vulnerable children population. Watch the video below to see how God yielded and multiplied the fruit of our labors through our partnership in Merkato!
