For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you this morning. As some of you may be aware over the weekend tragedy hit South Sudan. Although we do not have all the information what is clear is that on Friday clashes broke out between troops loyal to Vice President Riek Machar and those loyal to President Salva Kiir.
Through the weekend fighting escalated causing a mass evacuation of foreign aid workers, while South Sudanese fled to United Nation camps for protection.
I would like to share the words of our brother Jackson, LIA’s South Sudan Program Manager as received Sunday evening over the phone:
“The shooting is now so much. We cannot evacuate because bullets are flying all over the place . We have decided to stay home and wait until things are clear”
Let us be on our knees in prayer for our brothers and sisters in South Sudan and for God’s timely intervention. May God in His own way arrest this tragic situation and bring an end to the mayhem that has already caused the death of so many innocent civilians.
Let us stand in the gap for South Sudan and pray that peace and stability will be their portion. Kindly also remember the LIA team in South Sudan. May the Lord keep them and their families safe from all harm and danger.
