“I need an opportunity”

Rosa did not let her circumstances define her life, but determined to make a change.  Darwyn Sanchez, Lifeline’s Director of Schools in Honduras, shares her story …

Rosa Maria Rivera is a student from our school in Ocotillo.  She lives in Aldea el Carmen, which it is five miles from Ocotillo, and attends a Christian Church at her community.

In February, she came to my office and asked me for an opportunity to continue studying in middle school.

Rosa lost her mom (Waleska) five years ago, whose death was a homicide, and like many children in Honduras, she does not know who her father is.  She has been living with her grandmother, sister Daniela (11), and brother Brayan (9); all who live in poor conditions.

When she asked me for the opportunity to stay in school, she said, I need an opportunity to continue to study.  I cannot pay books or any supplies, and my grandmother cannot do it for me.  I know this is a Christian school; I would like to study here, graduate, and help my grandmother and siblings.”

When I heard her determination, I answered “Of course, we  will provide you the registration, books, and supplies.”

This teaches me why we are Lifeline and why Lifeline has schools. Our schools needs to be open for everybody who needs to know Jesus, but also whoever wants an opportunity to change their life, like Rosa.

Rosa came to our school and knocked on the door. At our schools, we have the mission to open doors to the children and youth who think they do not have more opportunities.  We do not want to be a common school; every day we want to follow Jesus and teach His Word to our students.

Thanks to God because we have these schools in Honduras.  Thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers who make it possible for many children to dream!

Now, Rosa is our new student in seventh grade, she has many dreams, is happy and ready to study.

That is why we are Lifeline. God is good.
Darwyn

Praises

Guatemala
  • Gretchen, Lifeline’s Co-founder, recently traveled to Guatemala, as we launch our newest form of the child sponsorship program: our Roots initiative. Roots connects U.S.and Canadian churches with a Lifeline church plant on the mission field.  Gretchen writes:

As I met with the parents in Guatemala at the principle house church San Jose Pinula, I was impressed with how involved the men are in the families.  Pastor Deybee and his wife Yocelyn have done an amazing job of focusing on the family as a unit in church. They even went to each family home and to personally explain the Roots Lovelink Child Sponsorship Program and ministry partnership with New Day Christian Church.

Something that was called to my attention, but which I had already been sensing, was that these parents wanted reassured that our photos and the program was wholesome and not something that would exploit the children or even perhaps be connected with human trafficking.

We are still building our credibility in Guatemala, and Deybee and Yocelyn have created a bond that has resulted in the church members having high confidence in their leadership.

It was also a rich blessing to sit with (on multiple occasions) and just be hugged by and return the hugs of little Luis who has a terminal heart condition.  His blue lips and white finger nails tell the story of his battle for oxygen and his diseased heart.

Bob and I eagerly look forward to our return trip there during New Day’s work team in November!

    Destined for change

After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

    – Luke 24:52

Not one of these disciples was sorry He had come their way.  Their losses were incalculable.  Yet they left the Mount of Olives with great joy, continually praising God, for their ordinary lives had been interrupted by glory.  The sufferings of this world simply could not compare to the glory He had revealed to them.  It sustained and swelled them long after the visible became invisible.

And you and I are the spiritual descendants of those who offered their lives, not for what they thought or what they hoped, but for what they knew.  For whom they knew.

Jesus the One and Only – this title is His forever.  He was the One and Only long before He breathed a soul into humanity, and He will continue to be the One and Only long after the last soul has been judged.

He is changeless.  But you and I were destined for change.  We cannot draw near Him and remain the same.  May our tenure on this planet be characterized by one simple word…Jesus!

Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness.

    – John 1:16
