Remembering Estania

We don’t always get to write the endings we want. Last year, we Estania featured Baby Estania in the Christmas Catalog photo for the Baby Formula program. She was brought to us as a 4.12 pound, two-month-old baby. Two weeks ago, we shared her story and a photo of her as a chubby, smiling, 18-month-old toddler. Largely, her huge turnaround in health and happiness was due to receiving your donations of formula through the Christmas Catalog, the support of the Peredo community, and the loving care of Ismala and her family.

A week and two days after our feature, RoRo was called to Ismala’s house. Baby Estania had suddenly died that afternoon. The cause of death is unknown. We mourn the passing of such a bubbly, joyful little one who has grown to mean so much to so many.

We were all looking forward to watching Estania grow up, enter school at Emmanuel Christian School of Peredo, come to know Jesus, and serve Him with her life. Just as bad news often comes with many unanswered questions, we don’t have all the answers as to why God allowed her young life to be taken far too soon. We don’t always get to write the endings we want.

However, we do not mourn as those without hope! We closed our fall newsletter article about her with these words: “She is the story of hope. She is Estania, and she is God’s joy.” Regardless of how long someone’s life is, we all have the chance to be a story of hope and leave a legacy that outlives us. Through the support and love of her Haitian and American communities, Estania’s little life was extended for 16 more months than she might have had otherwise as such a malnourished infant. We are praying Estania’s legacy is to bring attention to the need that other Haitian mamas and babies have which the Baby Formula Program and people like you help meet. Would you join us in that prayer?

This Little Light of Mine: Our Lead Summer Intern, Allison Conder, has written a beautiful tribute to Baby Estania that you can read here.
