BRINGING HELP TO THE PHILIPPINES
Charles Selby Hospital, Aparri, Philippines-Unfinished 3rd floor
On the coast of the South China Sea is an isolated Philippine community of 1 Million people in the region of Cayuga, and 62,000 in Aparri. The town of Aparri has two hospitals: a run-down government facility, which residents even mention, “is nasty and smells bad”; and the Charles Selby Mission Hospital. FAME helped fund the building of Phase 1 of the Mission Hospital in 1998. The facility is well staffed, efficient, and evangelistic but out of space to meet the needs of the area.
In January, FAME’s Executive Director, Bill Warren visited this hospital and his first impression was of a young, enthusiastic, energetic and committed staff of medical professionals. Bill was welcomed with flowers and music and a banquet celebrating the work of the hospital and their long partnership with FAME.
Bill also tells that as he toured the hospital, he found it to be clean and professional. However, he heard these words repeated several times: “This piece of equipment came from FAME in 1998, but it doesn’t work anymore.” There is a need to replace much of the hospital equipment that is past it’s useful lifespan. FAME hopes to be able to do this in the very near future.
In Phase 1, a third floor was built but never finished – it has just been a large area used for meetings and even training. Our Funding Goal of $33,000 is to complete the 3rd Floor of the Hospital, allowing the hospital to increase to 75 Beds for the community. This hospital is a great example, in that it is 80% self-supporting with paying clients helping to fund the work with the poor and outcast. This hospital is the healing arm of the Philippine Mission Church of Christ which began in 1947 and has a Seminary next door, training evangelists and pastors to reach the northern parts of the Philippines with the gospel.
You or your church can have a role in this strategic part of the Pacific Island region touching the South China Sea, by helping bring healing that opens the door for the good news of the gospel.
