News from Haiti
by Lonnie Burley, Director of Short-Term Trips
For several years in the month of March, FAME has taken two teams to Haiti. I have lead these teams and been blessed to work with some wonderful physicians, nursing students and faculty from St. Vincent hospital, IU Health, and Marian University. Non-medical participants also join us on these trips and play a major role.
Each trip has its “Ah-ha” moments. On our last day in Haiti, the team traveled by boat “across the lake” to a village with significant needs the past few years. Our intent was to offer healthcare and a gallon-sized ziplock bag of rice for each family. Toward the end of our day, one of our physicians told me she had talked with a young lady from the village who came seeking prayer and guidance for her life. This young lady admitted her need to repent of living a life of sin and seek the Lord’s forgiveness. The man she lives with forbids her to go to church or to accept the Lord into her life. Both our physician and her interpreter counseled with this young lady of how God is worth all the sacrifices she would make in exchange for a new life in Christ.
I believe this was a divine appointment that God brought this physician at this time for this purpose. It was no accident that this young lady found someone to listen to her story that day.
Your partnership with FAME provides the foundational resources needed to take the saving grace of Jesus Christ to people who are hundreds and thousands of miles away. To places where the gift of healthcare opens the doors to a much greater gift, Jesus Christ! In the end, that’s what really matters!
