The Ebola Outbreak Will Likely Get Worse
We received this update today from our partners at Heart to Heart International:
“As of this writing, the unprecedented Ebola epidemic has infected more than 3,000 people and killed more than 1,500 across four countries – Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria.
Now, as the virus spreads unchecked, the World Health Organization estimates there could be 20,000 infected resulting in more than 10,000 dead in the coming months as this epidemic spirals out of control. And as you know – there is no vaccine, there is no cure.
CRISIS WITHIN THE CRISIS
The epidemic has created a Crisis within the Crisis as the already fragile health systems in these countries crumble under the weight of this outbreak, making the fight against this terrifying virus that much worse. Hospitals and clinics are closing. Protective supplies as simple as gloves and masks are running short or have completely run out. Some aid organizations have pulled out.
Those on the front lines of this fight are paying a heavy toll. You’ve seen the news reports of American aid workers being sickened. Of the approximate 300 health workers who have been infected, more than half have died. Many times due to a lack of protective gear.”
In response to the need, FAME has sent a 5th shipment of needed medical supplies and protective gear.
