‘Army marching on Burkina Faso capital’ Posted: 21 Sep 2015 01:26 PM PDT Ken and Anita Hoch, CMF missionaries in Burkina Faso, are dealing with another period of significant civil unrest in their field of service.
On Wednesday the presidential guard (RSP), acting in support of former president Blaise Compaore, took two hostages: the country’s transitional president, Michel Kafando, and the transitional prime minister, Lt. Col. Isaac Zida. They also dissolved the transitional government put in place last year when then-President Compaore was ousted by street protests.
“The people of Burkina Faso took to the streets in massive protests,” said Ken. “The RSP responded with violence in hopes of breaking the people’s will. The people did not (back down). Over the weekend, the union of African states (ECOWAS) sent in two presidents to negotiate with the RSP and some members of the transitional government. Terms were announced last night, to the anger of the general populace.
“Is it unclear what is happening,” added Ken. “What is clear is that the general army has assembled and, as I write this, is headed towards the capital city Ouagadougou, calling for the RSP to put down their arms.”
The Hochs have plans to return home next month for a medical furlough that includes the delivery of their new baby. Teammates Tom and Suja Brane and Brian and Tabitha Hauser remain safe, but are prepared to travel to Mali if it becomes necessary. The team requests your prayers for their adopted country and for safe travels in the midst of the turmoil. |
