News from Phil and Gwen Hudson

I began 2015 spending two days with the Youth Hope team in a spiritually focused planning retreat. Most of the participants, based here in Fort Myers, were new to me. What a blessing to get to know them, learn from them, soak in their passion for God and Kingdom work and begin my new work with NMSI.
After a few days in the Office I left for SE Asia to explore NMSI ministries with Community Transformation components. Opportunities Now (an entrepreneur training school with micro-loans) in the country that the World Bank listed as 189 out of 189 countries for ease of starting a business is helping Churches become viable and assisting new outreach into unreached areas. I’m not easily impressed but I was impressed by our team and the level of professional and cultural expertise. The team laid out how I can add value over the next 24 months so my research and planning has begun. In addition, there are other NMSI community development needs where we will be introducing Best Practice methods for the specific types of projects moving toward sustainable models.

Next I visited a long time NMSI missionary in a nearby country who is leading a residential facility that works with trafficked and abused girls. The group she works with has high credibility and is a referral place for Social workers, Police and others who find/rescue these girls. I was blessed to be able to participate in daily devotions with the staff and interact a bit with a few of the residents. You can read one of their stories here.

The real world of poverty, rapidly changing societies, human trafficking, slavery and the sex trade, corrupt governments and broken systems can sometimes seem overwhelming. These are precisely the type issues that the Kingdom of God addresses. Communities can be transformed. There aren’t easy nor quick solutions but serious, sacrificial service done well makes a difference to the individuals helped and to their communities.

February found me in Kenya with Nasha and Africa Hope, two multi-faceted programs with a wide array of projects in Narok County. Social and economic changes are causing more dislocation for the Maasai community than they have experienced in many decades. The tribal communal land ownership structure has been changed by the government and all land is being demarcated into small individually owned plots. Understanding and mitigating the negative impacts of this change is the focus of much of my work over the next years.
I will be leading spiritually oriented journeys as part of my ministry over the next few years.

1. Custom designed Awareness/advocacy/prayer trips. Travel with me and learn how God is working in that specific context. Explore cultural dynamics and get to know missionaries and church leaders on site. See a few tourist type things in the midst of learning how to more effectively be involved, how to pray or how to advocate for the issues we are addressing in NMSI ministries. Mid to upscale. $$$

2. Travel with me on a seminar and or consulting trip. Learn through observing and debriefs how NMSI approaches problem solving and strategic planning on the field. $$

3. Participate in a classic Short term project with me. This can involve leading a seminar, running a camp for Orphans and vulnerable Children or remodeling a house for a national leader and other things. This typically involves groups from churches and can be youth or adult oriented.  $$

4. Come to the Center for Global Outreach in Fort Myers to gain a better understanding of the support and back office functions that allow ministry to happen around the world. This can be as short as a two hour informational tour to several days of yard work, maintenance, painting or other work at the CGO.  For individuals or groups, youth or adults. $

Joining NMSI again was a significant step of Faith for Gwen and I at this stage of our lives. We feel that God clearly moved us toward this decision and that my  education, experience and knowledge base are ideally suited for making a difference in today’s complex world. Gwen continues to work for Hope Hospice in the P.A.C.E. program. She ministers on a daily basis to the patients and her co-workers.  We are looking for support partners for my ministry in this phase of our life and service. In Christ,
Phil and Gwen
