Was Jesus Real?
“When we told you about the power and coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we were not following clever myths. No, we saw His greatness!” II Peter 1:16 (Simple English Bible)
When Bob came home from college on spring break, he begged off going with the rest of the family to worship on Sunday. His Dad wondered at the change in his son — Bob had always enjoyed being a part of the fellowship. When he had a chance, he talked privately to Bob. His son said that he wasn’t sure what he believed anymore. His history professor had stated quite emphatically that there was no proof that Jesus ever existed!
Bob was quite upset. His Dad opened the Bible to this letter from Peter and read it aloud. Here was an eye witness of Jesus. A man who’d seen and participated in the greatness of Christ. A man who followed our Lord, made so many mistakes but remained faithful. Bob had a choice: listen to someone who lived two thousands years after the fact or someone who had witnessed the events in the New Testament. Bob never doubted after that.
There will always be deniers and mockers. There will always be strident voices denouncing the truth of the Word or promote their own version of what it should be. Yet, the New Testament is full of eye witnesses of what they saw and heard. They believed. They remained faithful.
Can we do no less?
