The streets of Adama, Ethiopia, are populated with thousands of homeless children – kids who are orphaned, have been abandoned by their parents when they could not care for them, or have run away from home. The same is true of many of the large cities in throughout Ethiopia and Kenya.
Young Fasika is one of those children. She has been on the streets for more than two years. Alone in the cold, this beautiful child has been repeatedly raped and abused. Instead of protection, she has been beaten by police. Eating from restaurant dumpsters, threadbare, carrying the weight of emotional and physical abuse, she admits to using Khat (a local narcotic plant) to numb the pain. And because her city is trying to promote itself as a tourist destination, the government intentionally downplays the homeless population, meaning Fasika is not on anyone’s radar, not even a statistic.
But Fasika and the thousands of children like her, the most vulnerable, are on the hearts of LIA’s local church partners. And LIA is called to walk alongside these church partners to meet the needs of these children in a sustainable way.
