When Faith Intersects Development: Makueni, Kenya
|

| During the summer of 2015, we sent the Institute for Urban Initiatives (IUI) into six communities we’d phased out of in order to examine the long-term sustainability of our work. The IUI captured the essence of our transformational development model well in stating that its purpose is "to bring sustainable development to impoverished communities." Sustainability and empowerment are so key to how we function as an organization.
The video below captures what life in arid Makueni, Kenya is really like. Joshua, a local farmer, is a great example of how financial empowerment progresses and transforms to reveal real sustainable change. What started as a micro-loan for Joshua to purchase a pump to irrigate his farm grew into hope for the entire community. The community as a whole went from unsustainable farming that was constantly susceptible to the torments of dry seasons to gaining control of their food supply and teaching others how to do the same.
