Ministry Update

Hi Reggie. We are excited! This weekend we welcome our first Equip Britain cohort participants to Birmingham. Thank you for praying for Jeff, Megan, Jennifer, Robyn, Jacob and Nathanael; after a few days of settling in (including some minor ‘assignments’) we will all be off to a running start. Please pray especially for David and Teresa who are directing the bulk of the activities and assignments with the Ahos providing back-up support and mentoring for the Equip participants through their 10-month program. Many of their local ministry experiences will include direction from (and participation with) our Companions for Hope team. We look forward with eager anticipation to the ways God will work in and through this team and our community.

Prayer: Aug 25th – 31st

25th Equip participants Jeff & Megan arrive! Nathanael is already here and in the flat for the three lads.
26th T&T host Ermias & Abraham for breakfast and a Forge coaching session.
27th AM Tim speaks from Acts 18.24 – 19.12 in Yardley Wood with a church who helped us plant Dickens Heath Church. Tammy welcomes Equip participant Jennifer who will live right around the corner from us.
27th PM Rhema/Eritrean youth discipleship and English language worship service with Tim speaking from Acts 9.1-31. Equip participants Robyn & Jacob arrive!
28th August Bank Holiday (UK); Rhema Church Day Out in a Birmingham Park; T&T Skype with Miguel & Brenda, a couple from Mexico we are discipling who attended our Forge Taster Day last December.
29th Aug & 5th Sept Tammy participates in the Summerfield Place of Welcome. Pray for new connections.
30th T&T meet Rehoboth and Sami about the Rhema youth and English worship service; Tim rides motorbike with Vinnie to the grave of his mum and dad; for complicated reasons he was unable to attend his mum’s funeral 18 months ago.

Family Update

We’ve had the joy of several Facetime conversations with Andrew and Jess recently. Jess is experiencing a few challenges with work and is looking forward to being with us for Christmas – both for the visit and the variety of culinary opportunities Tim continually mentions! Andrew is sorting through possible dates in September and October for a visit – not yet certain of the duration. Tim’s father seems to be doing reasonably well health-wise, for which we are profoundly grateful.

6th Tim attends a 2020Birmingham Church Planters Forum.
8th T&T facilitate CPI Urban Birmingham hub gathering.
9th T&T attend Dickens Heath Festival followed by a post-wedding gathering for Adam & Lizzie.
11th 9/11. Pray for the Good News of the Kingdom of God to be lived out in your lives and our lives. Read Matthew 13, Ephesians 6.18-20, and Philippians 4.4-9.

Why ice hockey refereeing with
all the stuff you are doing?
A couple of weeks ago I attended a weekend ice hockey refereeing conference. I started refereeing last year for exercise, continuing as a ‘life-long learner’, and because it gives me opportunity to spend time with people who are far from God. In the photo below, you can see Craig, Jimmy, Aaron, and ‘H’, all connections from ice hockey. Craig has replaced or repaired cracks in our windscreens (that’s his business). Jimmy helped me coach beginners ice hockey 20 years ago and now referees at the highest level in the UK and internationally. Aaron (holding the doll) is a musician, photographer, and autism specialist – I led his mum’s funeral a few years ago. ‘H’ is a lorry driver. I have had and continue to have spiritual conversations with all of these lads.

The pictures below the four lads shows Ken Wheler, officiating manager for the National Hockey League (yes, that NHL! And his brother is a long-time referee in the NHL!), and he gave a presentation on what he looks for in scouting, supervising, and managing referees at the highest level: as in the photos this includes building a strong team and what makes a ‘great’ referee. The cross-over to the work we are doing with Companions for Hope, Forge, Equip Britain, and church planting in the FCC are numerous and profound! That’s why I am having a go at refereeing.

Birmingham Binmen on Strike

Our colleague David cheers for the Browns and recently ‘trashed’ the Vikings who we all know are better than the Browns. While his photo of the loo roll is funny, what is not so funny is the summer strike of the Birmingham Binmen. We’ve only had collection of our rubbish twice in the last eight weeks, at random times apart from our usual Monday collection. With only two of us, it hasn’t been so bad, but you can read more about how it is affecting the city here.
