We need to KNOW what we mean
when we use the word, “missions.”

Each year, we have the privilege of video recording the sessions of the annual Lake James School of Missions at the Lake James Christian Camp & Retreat Center in northern Indiana. Yesterday, we added the first session from the morning mission hour entitled, “Helping & Learning from the Missionaries We Send.” You can find that link above…the last one under August 16.

I am not calling attention to this video because I am the speaker, but because the subject matter is IMPORTANT. I will offer this warning; strong opinions are offered. Alan LaRue, veteran preacher & missions advocate, said we need this to be heard across the USA. I am sure some will disagree with Alan. The point is simple, “We need to sharpen our definition of missions!” This is true for the local congregation and for those receiving support.

If we define missions broadly and vaguely, “everything that happens outside our congregation,” we lose focus. Far too many things become labeled “missions” with that definition. The activities may be good, and they may deserve support. However, are they missions? Benevolence, for example is a vital part of the work of the church, but it is not missions (in my opinion).

Missions crosses cultural barriers with the gospel of Christ. Missions trains, prepares, and nurtures individuals to become cultural expatriates, adopting a people other than those among whom they grew up. Evangelism is a natural part of becoming a disciple. As we grow in Christ, bringing others who look like us, talk like us, and fit our culture to Jesus should naturally occur. Evangelism should never be considered less than missions, but it is nonetheless different. Missions crosses cultural barriers with the gospel in culturally correct expressions. Until we clearly define “missions,” we will never adequately fund them. You may not agree with me, but I ask you to join me in thinking about it!
