A powerful earthquake in Ecuador that killed more than 480 people and injured another 4,000 on Saturday, April 16, is the country’s worst tragedy in 60 years, according to top officials.
But Steve Palich, CMF’s Director of Ministry Center Development, is happy to report that CMF’s mission partners in Ecuador, Team Expansion missionaries Mike and Danell Bukta of Project New Hope, are doing fine and looking for ways to help the people who have been affected by the disaster.
“It was a big earthquake but we are all OK,” Danell responded in response to Steve’s inquiry. “Now, with your help, we have an opportunity to give assistance by focusing on two small towns that aren’t receiving any help. Our whole church is behind us and waiting on the plan so they can all be a part of helping.”
The critical need right now in these small towns is food and water. Mike Bukta will hold a meeting today with church members to organize and plan the team’s strategy in one town where a church member’s son-in-law, Vincent, lives with his large extended family.
“It will take us about five hours to get there because the damage is so great that you have to be careful and drive slowly,” said Danell. “We also have to be cautious as we carry relief supplies, because many people are robbing supply trucks! Since we may not be able to get into the town, we will set up a time to meet Vincent’s family with their horses and wagons to pick up the supplies.”
The Buktas would love for you to pray and pass this email on to others to pray with you.
“We want God to guide us on choosing the right towns and preparing the people before we get there,” said Danell. “Our goal is to continue the relationships that we will be able to build through this difficult time.” |
