The following was written by Vesta Ryan, a young 82 year old, after her recent mPower Approach trip to teach sewing in Uganda.
I felt the hand of God leading me on this teaching mission. I was fearful that I would not be able to endure. However, He gave me the strength I needed for the crowded travel, numerous flights, and sixteen hour days with no naps. Oh, His wonderful power!
We trained in dentistry, vision, vacation bible school, medical, and basic sewing skills. I was thankful for this team God assembled. We were a group of believers from seven states, many meeting for the first time, who came together to share our individual skills with our brothers and sisters in Christ on the other side of the globe.
We partnered with a church in Iganga, Uganda. The people we had the privilege of training were appreciative and bright. They looked forward to using these news skills to help their friends and family, as well as share the Gospel message with whomever God placed before them.
My group of three spent the week training six students to sew. By the end of the week they had each completed a shirt, a pair of pants, and a skirt. They were so proud of their garments! Several of the students have already begun making uniforms for an orphanage. They hope to sell them at the market, which will enable them to contribute to the support of their families and the local church.
God gave me an incredible love for these people. This love was completely reciprocated. When our time was over, one of my students held my hands and looked into my eyes and said, “God keep you”. Even now tears fill my eyes as I remember this.
Since returning home we have raised enough money to purchase a couple of nice sewing machines to be kept at the church for the students to use. God is so good!
I’m thankful I took a step of faith and left the comforts of home allowing God to use me in the lives of these precious few.
