IDES has been monitoring the current flooding events throughout the Central and Midwestern states, as well as contacting local churches in several areas that have been affected.
“I lived here for 35 years. We’ve had a little flood here and there, but I have never seen a flood this big in our community,” a local minister in Illinois said.
The flooding has been caused by not only melting snow, but also unusually large rain events that are causing rivers to crest well above their respective flood stages, submerging structures, homes, vehicles, and other property in surrounding towns.
On Monday, February 26th, our U.S. Disaster Response Coordinator visited with local churches in Niles, Michigan and Watseka, Illinois to discuss response efforts in their areas. IDES is responding by sending emergency funds to these local churches to provide basic necessities for the affected families in their surrounding communities.
Next week, he will be leading a team of volunteers in Watseka, Illinois in order to assist a local church in building 10 storage sheds for families whose homes have been damaged by the flood waters there.
IDES responds through local Christian Churches / Churches of Christ when crises arise in the U.S. and around the world. If your church needs help responding to significant flooding in your surrounding community, please contact us at
